Islandborn By Junot Diaz
Diaz, Junot. Islandborn. Illustrated by Leo Espinosa. 48p. 2018. ISBN 9780735229860
Ages(5 and up)
Lola attends a school where many of the children are from far off places. Her teacher, Mrs. Obi, wants each child to draw where they immigrated from but Lola doesn't remember the Island. When Lola asks the people of the neighborhood what they remember, as she discovers the magic of the island of color, and music, the question arises "Why did we leave?" Diaz never specifies which Island Lola and her community come from, but by doing so, he reaches a bigger group of immigrants, people escaping their homes from their own "monsters." The colors of this story jump off the pages bringing life into the book. As Lola discovers her Island, so does the reader.
